As an instructor, you can open a specific student’s Grades page to view the course exactly as that student sees it and, for group submissions, leave individual comments when needed. Student visibility settings let you hide items such as [grade summary totals](https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-hide-totals-in-my-students-grade-summaries/ta-p/671) or [grade distribution graphs](https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-hide-grade-distribution-scoring-details-from-students/ta-p/674).

For a general student perspective, open the Grades page in **Student View**.

> Macro (toc)

> ℹ️ **Note: **The student's grades shown in the Grades page may vary from the grades shown in the Gradebook. The student's Grades page is affected by hidden assignments, outstanding manually graded quiz questions, weighted assignment groups, and weighted grading periods. The Gradebook always contains the most current and accurate information about a student's current grade.

### Open a Student’s Grades Page

1. In Course Navigation, click the **Grades** link.
2. Open the student’s Grades page using one of these methods:
 1. View a student's [context card](https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-view-a-context-card-for-a-student-in-a-course/ta-p/608). First, click the name of the student [1]. Then click the **Grades** button [2].

 2. Open the student’s grades from the Grade Detail Tray. First, click the assignment cell for a student and click the **Grade Detail Tray** icon [1]. Then click the name of the student [2].

> ℹ️ Student Grades can also be viewed from a student's user details page.

### Review the Student’s Grades Page

On the Grades page, you see the same information students see:

1. Assignment name
2. Due date
3. Submission date
4. Assignment status
5. Score or submission type
6. Total possible points
7. Comments and rubrics (if available)

#### **Distribution details**

If enabled, scoring details and distribution graphs display in the assignment scoring area **[8]**. These details appear only after **more than five other students** have submitted the assignment. If scoring details are not visible, fewer than five students have submitted. Instructors can disable this by choosing to [hide grade distribution graphs](https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-hide-grade-distribution-scoring-details-from-students/ta-p/674).

#### **Totals and course grade**

At the bottom of the page, students see assignment group totals and their overall course grade **[9]**. Instructors can disable this by choosing to **hide total scores**.

> ℹ️ #### Additional notes about grading periods and submissions
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - When a course uses grading periods, the Grades sidebar shows assignment groups only for the grading period being viewed. Groups appear only if they are active in that period and contain at least one assignment due for the student.
> ℹ️ - When grading periods are weighted and **All Grading Periods** is selected, the sidebar shows each grading period’s weight.
> ℹ️ - If an assignment allows multiple attempts, the **Submitted** column shows only the most recent submission date.

### View submission details and leave individual group comments

The assignment details page lets you preview assignments and feedback as a student experiences them, including annotated feedback.

To open submission details, click the name of the **group assignment**.

#### **Group comment behavior**

- For group assignments that award the same grade to all members, SpeedGrader does not display or allow individual comments by default.
- The submission details page allows individual comments to students even when all members receive the same grade.
- To comment privately to one student, leave **Send Comment to the Whole Group** unchecked.

Individual comments appear in Conversations under the **Submission Comments** filter.
