Canvas allows instructors to migrate individual Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes. The migration process depends on whether the Classic Quiz uses Question Banks or Question Groups.

After migrating a quiz, preview and review the new version carefully before publishing it to confirm that questions, settings and other content migrated correctly.

## Before You Begin

Keep the following considerations in mind when migrating Classic Quizzes:

- **Equations:** Mathematical equations migrated from a Classic Quiz can be edited directly in New Quizzes. Open the question for editing, select the equation, then click **Edit Equation** to open the LaTeX editor.
- **Text (no question):** This Classic Quizzes question type migrates as a **Stimulus** in New Quizzes. Additional questions can be attached to the Stimulus after migration.
- **Practice quizzes:** Classic practice quizzes migrate with zero points possible and are hidden from the Gradebook and Grades page.
- **Surveys that use Question Banks:** Question Banks are not supported in New Quizzes Surveys and cannot be migrated. Classic Surveys that use Question Banks must be manually recreated as New Quizzes Surveys.

Use this method for Classic Quizzes or Surveys that **do not contain Question Banks or Question Groups**.

1. Open your Canvas course and select **Quizzes** from the course navigation menu.
2. Locate the quiz or survey you want to migrate.
3. Click the **three-dot menu** next to its title and select **Migrate**.

Canvas creates a duplicate, unpublished version in the New Quizzes format. Review and preview the migrated quiz or survey before publishing it.

Migrate a Classic Quiz That Uses Question Banks

Classic Quizzes use **Question Banks**, which are associated with a specific course. New Quizzes instead use **Item Banks**, which belong to the user and can be used across courses.

Question Banks cannot be migrated directly to Item Banks. However, you can migrate the questions within a Question Bank by first placing them into a Question Group in a Classic Quiz.

> ℹ️ **Note:** Classic Surveys that use Question Banks cannot be migrated using this process because Item Banks are not currently supported in New Quizzes Surveys. These surveys must be manually recreated.

1. Create a **new Classic Quiz** and use the **Question Bank name** as the quiz title.
2. Select the **Questions** tab.
3. Click **New Question Group**, then select **Create Group**. This step is required for Canvas to create an Item Bank during migration.
4. Click **Find Questions**.
5. Select the Question Bank you want to migrate, then click **Select All** to choose every question in the bank.
6. At the bottom of the window, select the Question Group you created from the drop-down menu, then click **Add Questions**.
7. Click **Save**.
8. Return to **Quizzes** in the course navigation menu.
9. Locate the Classic Quiz you created, click the **three-dot menu** and select **Migrate**.

Canvas creates a duplicate, unpublished New Quiz. Questions placed in the Question Group are converted to an Item Bank and shared with the course.

To locate the new bank, select **Item Banks** from the course navigation menu and search for it by name.

Question Groups in Classic Quizzes can be used to organize questions or randomly select questions for each student. When a Classic Quiz containing Question Groups is migrated, questions within those groups are converted to Item Banks.

If you do not want questions converted to an Item Bank, move them outside of the Question Group before migrating the quiz. Click the **move dialog menu** for the question, then drag and drop the question anywhere outside of the Question Group.

> **Note:** Classic Surveys that use Question Groups cannot be migrated and must be recreated as New Quizzes Surveys. Questions within Question Groups migrate as Item Banks, which are not currently supported in New Quizzes Surveys.

To migrate a Classic Quiz containing Question Groups:

1. Select **Quizzes** from the course navigation menu.
2. Locate the Classic Quiz you want to migrate.
3. Click the **three-dot menu** next to the quiz title and select **Migrate**.

Canvas creates a duplicate, unpublished version in the New Quizzes format. Questions contained in Question Groups are converted to Item Banks and shared with the course.
